The ACS is the FAA document that defines exactly what a candidate must know, consider and do to pass a checkride, task by task with tolerances. Modern US syllabi map every lesson to ACS codes so training records demonstrate coverage before the practical test.

The Airman Certification Standards (ACS) are the FAA documents defining exactly what an applicant must know, consider and do to pass a practical test — organised into areas of operation and tasks, each with knowledge, risk-management and skill elements, plus explicit tolerances (altitude ±100 ft, heading ±10°, airspeed ±10 kt on many private-pilot tasks). The ACS replaced the older Practical Test Standards, adding the knowledge and risk dimensions to what was previously a skill checklist.

The ACS is public and unambiguous, which changes how training should work: every checkride outcome is traceable to specific ACS codes, examiners must test to it, and instructors can align each lesson to the elements it develops. There is no mystery about the standard — only about whether training actually covered it.

Why it matters for flight schools

For schools, the ACS is the free blueprint for both syllabus design and quality control. Mapping lessons to ACS codes turns training records into coverage proof — the student is recommended when every element is demonstrably trained, not when the hours feel right. Post-test, the codes on notices of disapproval are the school's quality data: three failures on the same task code is a standardisation problem, visible only if someone aggregates the codes.

What is the difference between ACS and PTS?

The ACS superseded the Practical Test Standards, integrating knowledge and risk-management elements alongside skills for each task, with coded elements that link training, testing and deficiencies. Some certificates transitioned later than others, but ACS is the current framework for the major ones.

Do EASA skill tests use the ACS?

No — EASA tests are conducted against the tolerances and content defined in Part-FCL and associated examiner guidance. The concepts rhyme, but the documents and tolerances are not interchangeable.
