A stage check is an internal progress evaluation flown with a senior or standardisation instructor at defined points in a course. It verifies a student meets standards before advancing, catches training gaps early, and protects the school's first-time pass rate on the final test.

A stage check is an internal progress evaluation flown with a senior, standardisation or chief instructor at defined milestones in a course — end of pre-solo phase, before the first cross-country, before test recommendation. Under FAA Part 141 stage checks are mandatory structural elements of the approved course; in EASA ATOs they are internal quality gates defined in the training manuals.

The stage check serves two functions at once: verifying the student meets standards before advancing, and standardising instructors — systematic weaknesses that surface across one instructor's students are a training-system finding, not a student problem.

Why it matters for flight schools

Stage checks are the school's pass-rate insurance: catching a gap at the stage check costs a remedial lesson; catching it at the checkride costs a failure on the school's record, an examiner slot, and the student's confidence. The aggregated results are also the best instructor-standardisation data a Head of Training gets.

What happens if a student fails a stage check?

Remedial training on the identified items, then a recheck — exactly the point of the gate. A failed stage check is the system working; the same gap at the skill test is the system having failed.
